Off the shoulder with Missguided AU

Somehow, off the shoulder was not a trend I expected to fall in love with. It’s only because I’m now old enough to have seen trends circle back on me, and when I was in school, off the shoulder everything was the shiz. All the cool kids were wearing them, and there I was in my 80′s hand-me-downs. If I had any concept of retro-chic back in those days. My childhood insecurities aside, off the shoulder is sure to be a recurring trend for summer this year.

Having always had something on the shoulders for the best of a decade, I must say, with not so much as a spaghetti strap holding my threads up, one does feel a sort of a thrill of flashing ‘too much skin’ (but they’re just shoulders, after all). This off the shoulder crop top from Missguided AU, in combination with a plunging neckline, was way too sexy-cool for me to resist nabbing one for myself straight away. Now if only I had the knockers to fill it.

Backless Top and Double Pleats

Perhaps girls who slouch (i.e. yours truly) should steer clear from backless tops. The hump I’m always sporting isn’t my best feature, but for this special occasion, just to show off the ‘Portia’ top by Aussie brand August Street, I pulled those shoulders back like nobody’s business.

Talking about August Street again over here, this brand can do no wrong in my eyes. Their latest collection, ‘Transcendence’ at a glance – clean cut, sports luxe, edgy structure and unexpected forms – but everything occasion perfect, from casual weekend wear to something a bit more fancy. This backless top has the August Street brand signature all over it. Everything falls in place perfectly, and then those gorgeous pleats.

I decided to go double pleats today. This skirt is a thrift find from the Sunday markets. When I picked it up for just $3, I didn’t even bother to check that it was a reasonable adult size. But thanks to it being part of a little girl’s school uniform, it’s ridiculously short. I was ok with that. And now, to figure out how to wear it as a top.backless-minimal-black-white-monochrome-street-style

The must have foot wear trend of the moment is by far the Mule. Milking the ’90s style resurgence the Mule has definitely made a triumphant return to join the likes of the pool slide, undercut and the crop for spring/summer 2014.

Coming in a gazillian renditions of shapes and styles, from the wedge, to the chunky platform heel to the sleek stilletto, embellished with studs, stones, metals, gems, and jewels to prints, fur, leather, suede, cut outs – it can make you go a little crosseyed trying to decide what style to buy into.

Frills and Culottes

It’s finally started warming up for real here in Canberra, which means I could finally wear this Seed Heritage what-dreams-are-made-of off the shoulder top.  It’s the poofiness that had me sold instantly. I’m a sucker for unusual silhouettes. And poofiness. And speaking of poofy, how perfect are these neoprene culottes? Funny how a utilitarian fabric like neoprene makes such a great material for tailored clothing. It’s the way that it stays so smooth, and keeps its subtle structure.

Last time I was at Savers in Melbourne, I finally yielded to my perpetual desire for just one more camel jacket and picked up this clean and simple vintage number by Sportscraft. However, I seem to never want to wear my thrifted pieces as is, so there I was flipping up the collar and scrunching up the sleeves. It’s an easy way to update an old school classic. And so is wearing it with Nike Roshe Runs.

Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival Sydney 2014 Runway Report – Austrailan Fashion Labels

The fantastic finale to this year’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival was the Australian Fashion Labels runway show, featuring its 5 formidable Adelaide labels, Cameo the Label, Finders Keepers, Keepsake the Label, Jaggar the Label and The Fifth Label. True to A.F.L style, the five collections were fashion forward, with exciting silhouettes and statement prints made in wearable separates and one pieces for every occasion. Every girl is going to want a piece of it.

Photography by Red Photography.

Cameo-the-label-2014-mbffsydney

Cameo the Label showcased their signature style with the use of directional prints and bold silhouettes in a crisp black and white and deep wine colour palette. Head designer, Siham Elmawey is always on point, delivering low hemlines and high necklines, with the kick flare bringing a fierce feminine edge. Cameo the Label continues to define the prints of the season, this time with an enigmatic and visually complex fractal print and animal print in electric hues. See the full gallery.

Finders-keepers-2014-mbffSydney

Peplums, plaid and pyjamas came together on the Finders Keepers catwalk. We saw delicately draped fabrications in fine stripes, crafted into romantic rompers and two piece pajama inspired combos. Oversized, boyfriend style bed time blazers were also a highlight. See the full gallery.

jaggar-the-label-2014-mbffsydney

Oriental inspired prints interspersed Jaggar the Label’s street-chic collection. Fanciful florals featuring the flight of the cranes were pared back with chambray button ups and slouchy fits. Key pieces were executed in soft, reflective fabrics in black, deep red and navy hues. See the full gallery.

keepsake-the-label-2014-mbffsydney

Keepsake the Label introduced bib style necklines with barely there spaghetti straps. Midi, maxi and mini lengths were all explored, in front splits and fit and flare silhouettes. Digital floral prints blended with feminine lace detail. See the full gallery.

the-fifth-label-2014-mbffSydney

We spied laidback luxe and greyscale grunge at The Fifth Label. In typical A.F.L style, stripes and jumpsuits made their appearance, mixed with faux leather and florals. Clashing prints and relaxed silhouettes gave the collection a fun and fearless aesthetic. See the full gallery.

Wear it Wrong – the Button Down Shirt as an Off Shoulder Top

It seems like all we hear about is how we should wear things right – florals and stripes don’t go together (or do they?); White shoes a no-no (or are they?); Legs or cleavage, never both – The ‘fashion rules’ change so often I’ve given up trying to keep up. So just forget the rules. You can’t go wrong when you wear it wrong. Flip the skirt backwards; wear a dressing gown as a jacket; throw on two jacket at the same time (or three).

Today’s Wear It Wrong post is all about the button down shirt. The off the shoulder crop top being one of my favourite styles at the moment, I tucked and tied a vintage chambray shirt into one. And since I don’t want my lovely boyfriend thinking me an exhibitionist, might I also suggest a couple of well placed safety pins if you’re going to try this at home. Watch out for my tutorial, coming soon!

In other news, I’m calling Aussie label Lilya my brand for spring. They hit it on the spot every time with their effortless designs. I’ve been living in these easy breezy ‘Talei’ chambre pants in perfect tapered cut for weeks now, not the least because they make me feel like I’m perpetually on vacation in the Greek Islands. Of course, casual pool slides are also part of my Mediterranean vacay set.

Adam Liew of Melbourne

At this year’s FASHFEST in May, Canberrans had a first taste of up and coming Melbourne haute couture label Adam Liew, in the form of that crop top and puffed skirt on gorgeous model Mimi. Since then, in six short months Adam Liew has taken leaps and bounds in establishing its presence in Melbourne and internationally, having recently started stocking its ready to wear collection at Via Monte Napoleone at the spanking new Emporium Melbourne.

While you know yours truly is more likely to be seen in drop crotch jeans and a sweater than a cocktail dress, I could hardly resist making an exception this one time to shoot in this gorgeous Adam Liew original from his previous haute couture collection. Even a tomboy like me can appreciate the knack that Adam Liew has for making a woman feel Audrey-Hepburn-pretty. I can’t help but feel like a bit of a bad-princess in this tulle dress. Now if I could do my year 12 ball over again…

Find out more about Adam Liew and follow the label’s journey on Instagram (@Adamliew_melbourne).

Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival Sydney 2014 Street Style

I was a child in a sartorial candy shop at this year’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival Sydney, with all the amazing street style to snap. From minimalism to maximalism, bespoke pieces made from deconstructed Ikea shopping bags, tennis skirts and full length maxis. Here are some of my favourite streetstyle snaps with the help of Red Photography.

Tailored Trousers and Men’s Shirt

Being a woman and working men’s clothes is definitely a thing in my books. So just to be clear, the fact I own more men’s shirts than my boyfriend (come to that, his shirts are also my shirts) doesn’t mean I envy the male sex. Except, I suppose, the luxury of getting better looking as they grow older.

I’m again borrowing a couple of chapters out of men’s style with this thrifted shirt and tailored trouser combo. I usually refrain from ordering pants online before trying, but I majorly lucked out with these Missguided Cigarette Trousers, which are a beautiful fit. It is, of course, always a good idea to add back a touch of femininity, and this simple d’orsay pump from Zara always goes perfectly with a trouser look.

With a simple outfit like this, accessories are a must. For me, it’s all about keeping it simple with a few key pieces. Ear bling doesn’t often make it onto the agenda, but this double pearl earring from Lobe Designs has persuaded me otherwise.

The Tuxedo Dress

Though I do try to put a bit of variety into the ‘colours’ I wear, I always find myself going back to black. The one thing I do bemoan is the fact that I hadn’t come across the idea of wearing a blazer as a dress until now. The cat being out of the bag with this idea, I’m sure it’ll be my next great cliché. The sexy cool of this Missguided tuxedo dress would be hard to live up to, however. I also can’t wait to wear it as a jacket. Versatility, tick. I’m sure it needs no explanation that I paired it with my other recently procured Missguided piece, these lace up stilettos. As for accessories, as always, I run a minimal operation. Pearl earrings and a classic watch are enough for me. And this Alannah Hill rose gold bangle is probably the best thing I’ve ever receive from a runway gift bag.

Casual in Classics

While I (very often) satisfy my fashion victim itch and buy out the trend of the moment – I’m talking about all things fur covered baseball caps, mesh sweaters and the what-were-you-smoking-printed-tights – I’m sensible enough at least to know that those little experiments are destined for eBay, while the classics are for keeps.

See, exhibit one, the breton stripe sweater. This one is a slouchy fitting, charmingly textured ‘Sailor’ knit by Lilya – one of my favourite brands of the moment. Exhibit two, the Converse All Star, a design largely unchanged since the 1950′s. And why would they ever, ever change something that can’t be improved upon? Now you might not agree with me as to the status of the skin tight skinny jean as a classic, but for me this (satisfyingly shiny) coated skinny jean in Aussie Brand Toi et Moi’s signature cropped ‘Montrer’ is pretty much perfect.

(If you see the silhouette of a teddy bear in one of the windows behind me, you’re not crazy. There isn’t much visual information to go by, but I believe it’s Winnie the Pooh..)

The Split Maxi Skirt

I used to lament the fact that I didn’t live in a place where I could pop down to the mall for my favourite international brands. However, recently, I can’t imagine a better place to be right now but right here in the middle of – dare I say it – the Australian fashion renaissance. I’m discovering more and more drool-worthy Aussie brands all the time, which were totally made for my relaxed minimal aesthetic. I have to thank Canberra boutique Mussen Clothing for my fateful introduction to Aussie brand Staple the Label. This label can do no wrong in my eyes. This split maxi skirt is one my favourite pieces from Staple the Label’s new season collection. It’s sexy, not sexual. That’s what it’s all about.

My stripe obsession continues with this effortless striped top by Mink Pink, also from Mussen Clothing. Due to a sudden drop in temperatures here in Canberra, I’ve topped it all off with this spring-perfect faux suede cropped biker jacket from Missguided.

P.S For my Canberra readers, you can pop right into the Mussen Clothing boutique to check out these items and other new season beauties. They’re address is 17 Mort Street, in Civic.

As I put fingers to key board to open with a cliché ‘everyone needs them a little black dress’, I gave myself a metaphorical slap on the wrist – you deserve more from me than a sartorial pickup line. So instead, a question for you: is the little black dress still so prolific these days that it justifies an acronym (even if you’re not a modern day Holly Golightly)? I blame fast fashion for its decline, but a classic will always live on. This Parisian-chic drop-waist silk dress was a beloved find from Decjuba’s new Canberra boutique last week. Styled with these goes-with-everything cut-out booties, also from Decjuba, this is a paired back feminine-not-feminine look that’s suits this tomboy perfectly.

When I was invited to check out Decjuba’s newly opened Canberra Centre location, I worked myself into a bit of a frenzy grabbing pieces off the racks. The whole new season collection embodies Parisian-chic for me – classic, well made, and fresh on trend, with a laid back je ne sais quoi.  I was immediately obsessed with their perfect draped tees and tanks in Breton stripe and grey marl, light wash skinny jeans and tailored trousers, structured blazers in contrast fabrics, and easy sports luxe weekend essentials. Everything is conceived around wardrobe basics, so you can virtually select any three pieces off the rack and you have yourself a polished outfit.

I am so excited about the addition of Decjuba to the Canberra retail scene. It’s has a multi-purpose range that resembles Zara, on trend yet timeless like Seed Heritage, whilst boasting high quality fabrications and basics that you would find in Marcs and Witchery, all at a lower price point – in fact, this 100% silk dress is a bargain at $150.

The only question that remains is: does the ‘J’ come before or after the ‘C’?

Decjuba is located on first floor Canberra Centre in Civic, right next to L’Occitane. Also shop Decjuba online and keep up with the latest on Instagram (@decjubaofficial).

Canberra doesn’t seem to be ready to give up the cold. Just as well, because I’m not ready to give up my chunky cable knits. A while ago, after I posted my giant knit outfit, a few of you questioned me about my choice of styling slouchy top to bottom. While I do love me a potato sack outfit, I happen to think that baggy on top and skinny on the bottom is proportionately ideal. So here’s me playing by the rules for once, in my ASOS cable knit and Toi Et Moi cult ‘Montrer’ coated skinny jeans. But I’ll bore you no more about proportion talk. We both that it’s all about the shoes, right? And what shoes. I haven’t got this excited about a pair of shoes this year, as I did about the Seed Heritage Espadrilles in ‘Ocelot’ print. Having missed out on the black and white version from the previous season, I pounced on the re-released style with a beige-y undertone. I really hope Seed Heritage re-releases it’s Bianca espadrille in the original ocelot print. I’ll have five pairs of those please!

Styling and Photography - Fashion-dacci.com

So there I was, loitering outside Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival last month, and this ripped guy with perfect hair, wearing a bespoke shirt made from Ikea shopping bags came up to me asking for a photo. I very almost said no because I was thinking: ‘no way I’m cool enough to be photographed by this guy’! So that was Kurt from Fashion-dacci.com – street style photographer, blogger and stylist. His online shop has the coolest stuff you can’t find anywhere, so it’s no wonder it’s frequented by the likes of those rad chicks from How Two Live. Kurt is so full of awesome that I uncharacteristically agreed to having him style and shooting me. For this shoot I got to play dress up in some of the coolest stuff from Kurts online store. I have no words for this custom Nike Vest, with the sleeve cut wayyy off. Laid back sexy, tick – is that, like, an oxymoron or something?

But enough about me. Keep it on the hush hush, but I’m putting together a massive giveaway for you (celebrating 10k followers on Instagram) and this custom Nike vest will be one of a whole bunch of cool prizes

Racewear My Way

Just another one of those things that makes me so not normal - my brain just turns off when racing season comes around and the racewear frenzy takes over. Me in a bright orange dress, giant fascinator and platform heels? It’s the stuff of comedy gold. On the other hand, if I could turn up to the Melbourne Cup in ripped jeans and a sweater I’d be all over that. My critics (i.e. my mother) often pull me up for dressing too casually, but it’s only because they’re not getting the gravity of what I’m trying to achieve here. It’s a social experiment. I’m attempting a single woman circumnavigation of the boundaries of smart casual. Of course, in saying that, I do believe in taking up the challenge of making something yours that’s is usually not you. Here’s me in racewear my way, in Dead Ivy ‘Forever After Frock‘  - unfeminine sexy way with a bit of edge. I love the whole once-piece-masquerading-as-a-two-piece thing.

Got your racewear sorted for Melbourne Cup?

You know I’m completely knitwear obsessed, so you might think I’m a bit biased when I say a luxe knit can take you through 3 out of 4 seasons. Is that pushing it, you ask? A jumper and dress, for example, are so layerable for spring, and if it warms up in the afternoon, just drape that knit like you’re in an 80′s movie. This Gasparre Cashmere Cable Sweater is everything, deliciously chunky, luxuriously soft, and the fashion forward cable detail makes a statement piece out of an old classic. You know you’ve got the ultimate cable knit when you just want to spend all day lounging in it with nothing but knickers on, which I confess was what the rest of my day looked like after I ripped open my beautiful Gasparre Cashmere gift box.

Also debuting today is my Carrera 6008 sunglasses which are an absolute steal from Vision Direct (am I the only one that can’t remember how many ‘r’s are where?).

You know when you’ve got a catchy pop song stuck in your head and then, when you’re out in public, you suddenly start singing it and everyone stares? Ok. So maybe that’s just me. In any case, that’s what I’m feeling right now with this white on camel colour scheme. It’s like white on camel turrets. Well I blame these beyond cool Maven the Label white ‘Absolute Joggers‘ with pleated drop crotch – comfort and style done right. It makes sense of course to extend the comfort factor with a pair of slides. You know I’ve amassed quite a collection, but these slides are new to the family from Silent D Shoes.

First I was unsure – an Alexander Wang x H&M collection that’s all about active wear? At first glance not that relevant to someone like me who considers retails shopping a workout. Then, I was intrigued – by the idea of clothes that looked badass and also performed. Then, predictably, I was obsessed. So much so that I actually made the midnight drive to Sydney to be in time for the 7am opening, with my ragtag H&M raiding party (which included blogger Kurt from Fashiondacci and adorable Instagrammer @Tim.lo). As the first H&M designer collaboration that Aussies could buy in person, this was a pretty awesome one. I can only describe the buzz in the room as being ‘Wang’d’.

Although I had expected to fall in love with the more basic pieces from the collection, such as the neoprene sweatshirts and leather pant (yes, I call that ‘basic’), seeing and touching in person sealed the deal for me with this Alexander Wang x H&M white top with perforated patterns, reminiscent of the memorable Alexander Wang SS’13 collection. Although it is technically a top, I thought it just made the dress length cutoff. I’ve double-Wang’d with Alexander Wang Rocco duffle and block heeled the pins with my newly acquired Novo ‘Fortress’ heels.

Did you make it to the Alexander Wang x H&M opening, and what did you pick up from the collection?
